Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun, also know as Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, is one of the most famous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Tapkeshwar is a famous holy temple of Lord Shiva on the bank of seasonal Asan river near Dehradun.
Known to have one of the oldest Shivlinga in the cave, Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple is located at 6.5 km from Dehradun city. As water droplets continuously drops on the shivling, hence it was named as “Tapkeshwar.”
History & Myth
Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is situated on the bank of a river that adds to the beauty of the holy place. One of the oldest Shiva lings is in the cave nearby where the river enters and water drops drip down on the Shiva ling. The small cave with this splendid scenery is said to be once resided by Dronacharya- the teacher of Pandavas and Kauravas in Hindu holy epic Mahabharata written by Ved Vyas. The cave is named Drona Cave after his name.
When Dronacharya’s wife Kalyani gave birth of Aswosthama, the couple had a problem to feed him beacause milk didn’t produce in Kalyani’s breast. Dronacharya could not afford to buy cow or cow milk for his son. Young Aswosthama was a clever child to know is parent’s problem and prayed to lord Shiva for milk. Happy with child Aswosthama’s prayer, lord Shiva Provided him with milk drops which dripped on the Shiva linga in Drona Care – the cave where Dronacharya and his family resided. Thous Aswosthama’s hunger and desire was fulfilled. Today, we can see the enchanting scene of water drops silently dripping down to the Shiva ling. tapak means to drip, thus the name Tapkeshwar meaning that drips.
How to Reach
By Rail :- Dehradun is a major railway station which is connected to all cities in the country. The major cities are connected by express trains and super fast trains.
By Air :- Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is a domestic airport located about 20 km away from city center. Taxi cabs are available from airport to city, which cost about Rs 400.
By Road :- All nearby cities are connected to Dehradun by state owned Uttarakhand transport buses.
